I am a HP fan and this printer is not even compatible with my new HP system. It constantly has printing spool errors (you need to go to services and stop and restart spooler) and then it loses all the print drivers.
When it works its just fine/good in terms of quality (although noisy and constantly adjusting as others have reported) but this product is absurdly unstable. Copying function is good.
Save yourself a lot of time and frustration and buy a different printer.

I was able to install and work this printer-that much was easy.
This printer takes FOREVER to do anything. On my old printer (which died in a car wreck) I would tell it to print and it was done. This piece of junk takes it sweet time. You command it to print and it sits there for about 15 seconds. Then it does some sort of shifting around and warming up and god knows what else it is doing. This goes on for about 45 seconds. Then it actually prints. That is assuming it doesn't have a mystery paper jam. Since there is no paper jammed I don't understand what the problem is.
The fun part is that this process is repeated every single time you want to print. I will print one page. Stop for less than one minute to prepare a new page and click the print button. In that short amount of time the printer is back to ignoring me for 15 seconds, switching gears, warming up and whatever it does for an additional 45 seconds before actually printing.
Find a different printer. Do not buy this one. |

Impossible to set up wireless with Mac |

I had read the reviews on this printer, but my daughter had a wireless HP All In One and hers was great, so I purchased this one. Unfortunately, it was a different model. I should have listened to the reviews. It took hours to set up the wireless features with a PC, the instructions were not easy to follow, and I could not get it to work wireless on my Mac Book at all. It will work only hard wired. I bought it for the Mac, so I was very disappointed. It is extremely slow, noisy, and takes forever to print. I have had several HP printers over the years and have really liked them, but i totally wasted my money on this one. Don't buy this model, it's terrible. |

My friend was a VP at HP. Their business model is to sock it to you with ink costs. |

Made the mistake of buying this printer based on a handful of 5-star ratings. From now on I won't purchase a printer unless it has a minimum of 75 ratings (excluding the faked, planted ones).
Have owned this thing for about 2 years.
First off, I had all kinds of problems with the wireless feature. Several times I called HP support and had to turn my system over to them via Remote Access for several hours while he tried to rebuild the installed software. Nightmare.
Second, after two years of printing less than 5 pages per week, the printhead is shot.
Third, and perhaps most noteworthy, I am friends with a former VP of the printer division at HP, and he said the entire business model for the home and small office printers is to sell printers at very little profit (sometimes even intentionally pricing below their production cost) and then socking it to the consumer with ridiculously-priced ink cartridges that you blow through at a rapid-fire rate. If you stop and think about it, $29-$40 for an ink cartridge? Really? When HP uses the word "consumers" they should be more honest and use the word they really intend -- "suckers!"
If I were you, especially for this printer, well, first avoid it, but second, if you do buy one or have one already, look for refillable ink cartridges that you refill yourself. Will save you 80-90% on your ink costs. |

Set up is not a breeze! |

Reviewed on 18th August 2010:

We purchased this printer when my son's printer died - so I got a new printer, and he got my hand me down (for college). My husband had previously purchased two printers of this model for his workplace. FWIW, my husband and I are both computer professionals, and luckily have a good bag of tricks from our years of working with computers and peripherals.
Set up and installation was a horrible experience. Every time we hit another glitch, my husband would say, "We had this same problem with the ones at work. We did everything except stand on our heads to make it work. Finally it just started working."
What specifically were the problems? In order of appearance:
1) The instructions are the worst I have seen in a while. In trying to make them user friendly, with nice photos and a minimum of words, they made them practically useless. Contrast this with two large booklets included, one for setting up the wireless function, and the other for setting up the fax function.
2) There are NO instructions on how to set up the clock. The instruction sheet just has a picture of the console, and a little hourglass, like that is enough to know what the heck it is expecting? It kept asking us to give it a number, and we finally figured out it wanted a fax number, one of the features we do not plan to use. Then it got stuck in a "printer preparation - please wait" infinite cycle that I finally just turned the darn thing off after waiting 30 minutes and still no result.
3) The paper feeder would not catch the paper and feed it through. The printer kept telling us to load paper in the tray, but there was already paper there. My husband said what they had done at work was try different stack heights of paper, until they found one that worked. Once we got it going, it seems to feed ok, but it took us at least 15-30 minutes to get it started the first time, and then it jammed in the duplexer unit.
4) The software installation CD would not work in my computer. My husband took the CD to the computer he uses and it read it ok, and he told me this also happens all the time at work, where a CD is unreadable on some machines, and he scouts around until he finds one that can read it. We then transferred the files via the home network and installed from the hard drive.
5) During the process of looking for updates on the HP website, and downloading and installing them, the computer crashed, with the message that "could be caused by new software or hardware." This cascaded into a series of problems necessitating numerous reboots and finally after midnight, things returned to mostly normal. We had started the process of setting up this printer around 8 pm...
6) This printer spits out the printed page with gusto, so be sure to pull out the extension on the paper catcher, or your pages will end up all over the floor.
Despite it all, I am looking forward to using my new printer. The scanner does a very nice job of capturing the colors in photos! Just don't believe the "easy setup." |

Overall good machine but poor photo quality |

I've used the fax, print, and copy functions of this printer and have no complaints. I don't do much scanning so that's just an extra feature that goes unused. The print speed is quick enough I don't feel like I have to wait forever when I'm in a hurry. The wireless makes it worthwhile. However, the photo printing is horrible. The pictures turn out very pixelated and fuzzy - I am using an 8 megapixel camera, printing 4x6 photos and getting these results. If you want to use this as a photo printer my recommendation is don't but use snapfish, a kiosk, or buy a different printer. This is disappointing because this machine replaced my d135 all in one which did great pictures. The cartridges are reasonably priced, (black at about twenty, and the colors at ten a piece) but smaller capacity than my d135 or even old PSC 2200 cartridges so if you are a high volume printer you'll be replacing cartridges more often. This works well if you don't print a lot or very often so you don't run the risk of having your cartridges dry out. |

The WORST printer that I have ever owned |

This is by far, the worst printer that I have ever owned. From day one, it has not fed 80% of the paper correctly. It grabs it incorrectly and then it gets jammed. So, we went to using a backup printer to print to and figured it would be just a fax/copier. Well, now the machine will not fax a document at all. It never connects to any other fax machine, and yet it did when it was purchased (45 days ago). Had to bring back the old All in One printer just to fax, but IT can't print anymore because of a lightning strike. Would send it back, but didn't have room to store the packing materials, so now it's in the garage as a dusty paperweight. Do you think we could get paper to feed properly and a fax machine to actually fax something after all these years of development? |

Easy Setup on Mac 10.6 |

I don't typically write reviews but I almost didn't buy this printer because of the number of negative reviews suggesting this is a difficult printer to setup. This is not the case if you're connecting to a Mac running Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6). Snow Leopard includes the necessary drivers so once you've gone through the setup (unpacking, installing ink, etc.) simply go into the system preferences -> printers and fax. You should see your new HP printer listed - no drivers to install at all. If you don't see your printer listed, make sure it's connected to your wireless network - use the menu system on the LCD display to navigate to the network settings.
I've only done some light printing and some scanning so I can comment too much on these features but if you're worried about dealing with an installation nightmare, don't worry as long as you're using a Mac with Snow Leopard. |

The low ink warning has come on, but I've continued to use it and haven't needed to replace either of them yet. I will usually go to the property option of "fast/economical" and "black ink only" to save ink, so that has helped the ink cartridges to last longer. I'm not a tech expert, but found the use of this to be quite easy and would recommend it. |

I received this printer as a birthday present after my last one died. It's pretty good. The color quality is alright, but that's not important to me. It scans reasonably quick, and with good enough quality. If you want excellent color reproduction and high-quality scans, look elsewhere. I'm not sure if there's a way around it, but all scans are saved in JPEG format, which is pretty terrible. However, for most people, the scanning function will be good.

False advertising on energy efficiency |

This is an excellent printer, and for a bunch of Macs in our home, no problem to set up for wireless printing.
But what's with all the ecofriendly ad-banter? When it is on, it uses about 5 watts unless printing, when it goes up to 20 to 40 watts. All very well. But then you would expect it to use less energy in sleep mode, right? Nope- still 5 watts. So one has to wonder what the point was of even engineering a sleep mode, with its flashing power button, etc. To lull consumers into a false sense of saving energy? 5 watts, day in day out runs into 43 kWh per year, or $4.30 of electricity per year. That's a bit of a vampire!
Anyhow, for the users who had problems with their wireless setup- for macs, the order of operations makes a significant difference. The Airport connection for your computer has to be fully on (with network selected) before firing up the HP utilities. And if you use the remote scanning software, don't turn off the HP utility base application or the scanner will lose your connection. |

I purchased this printer with high hopes as my last HP printer lasted three or four years. This printer was a nightmare since I took it out of the box a few months ago.
The first issue was print quality, which was very poor. Lines would blur frequently for no apparent reason. Next it wouldn't print at all. The first time I called customer support they kept me on the phone then said, well, it's a printer problem, let me transfer you to a printer tech.
Customer support tried but had me on hold for long minutes while the tech (and I use that word very loosely) apparently asked his supervisor what to do. It solved the problem for about two weeks, when then it began to grab large chunks of paper at a time and feed them through, finally printing sometimes and sometimes not on final pages. A phone call did not help on that.
I had more problems with printing and I called again and computer support could not help at all. They offered me a refurbished unit, which I refused since this is TWO MONTHS OLD! Would you take a refurbished unit for a two-month old unit? Now it will not print at all. I am so frustrated I went out and bought a cheap Canon printer. Four calls to HP and no resolution and an offer that is absurd for a refurbished unit. Great customer service, right?
In a nutshell, this $150 plus dollar printer has from week two not worked right and HP's customer support is TERRIBLE. The techs know NOTHING. I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER HP PRODUCT AS LONG AS I LIVE. I run a business and do not have time for this.

Great printer for me |

I bought this printer in May to replace an old OfficeJet 6310 that finally bit the dust. I was a bit reluctant after reading all of the negative reviews, but bought it anyway and am quite happy with it. I have experience repairing printers, and I am fond of the HP line.
The printer was easy to set up. I chose to use the network connection so that I can use it with all of my computers. On the Mac side, it was a breeze -- the driver was already built into Snow Leopard, so it was just a matter of selecting the right printer in preferences. As for Windows, I had to go online to HP's website to download the XP driver -- no big deal, and a good idea anyway so that you have the most recent drivers installed.
The scanner also works great. I have scanned quite a few pictures into the computer, and the color levels are just right: No need to make any adjustments. When the picture is reprinted on the printer, it matches the original exactly.
As for the negative reviews, I have no idea why they could be having problems. The 'noise' the printer makes is typical, and nowhere near as loud as some of the claims. All of my prints come out looking great. The only issue I had was that the duplexer left black streaks on a few pages, but that went away after a few pages went through the printer.
One word of advice: Do not turn the printer off; just let it go to 'sleep' on its own. Every time you turn the printer on, it has to run a purge/clean cycle to ready itself for printing. This is the nature of any printing system where you replace just ink cartridges, and not the printhead -- and that includes Brother printers. |

I've owned my fair share of printers over the last couple of decades, and I can easily say this is the absolute hands down worst printer I've EVER owned. If it was just the noise or the speed, I would be irritated... but most likely not inspired to write a review. But for a WEEK now I've been trying to get this printer to consistently print the color black from the same source document, and the thing REFUSES! I've gone so far as to run the colored ink cartridges completely dry - which now means I get about two prints of black ink, and then the same document starts running through the printer - and spitting out a blank sheet of paper. Sometimes a restart of the program works, sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes the document will print black, sometimes pink, sometimes light blue. It's BLACK TEXT for crying out loud. Add to that - the printer IS loud and slow as molasses, and of the three computers in my house it would only work with one. I can't get the scanner to scan. I've noticed (though I only bought this a few months ago), that my local Staples has this printer in the discontinued clearance section of the store. |

Bought this printer for my dad thinking it was a great wireless printer. Boy was I wrong, worst waste of $[...] I ever spent on a printer. First of all, setup took 30 minutes plus, FOR EACH COMPUTER in my house, most other printers you can just plug the USB into a Windows 7 OS and it automatically finds the driver. BUT NO, I had already thrown away the box and had to go back outside to get the setup CD.
Then the printer itself skips right over the pick your language and region part and displays in Chinese, how the hell am I supposed to work with this thing when I don't even know what the tiny display screen says. It's been 45 minutes and I'm already royally pissed off so I start pushing random buttons on this thing trying to get to the setup part to change it to english and the printer starts wasting it's expensive ink printing useless random setup sheets MULTIPLE times, I swear the thing just wants to make HP some money by making me go out and get ink.
(Plus, HP only includes these dinky "starter" cartridges that run out of ink faster than you can say OH WAT?)I then try and call HP customer care and waste 45 minutes finding out they really DON'T care... they just outsource you to call centers overseas who could probably care less and call you by annoying nicknames... my name is NOT Jelly. They made me reset the printer multiple times and the language display still couldn't be fixed. Even after 6 times of being asked, "are you sure the printer is ON?" YES!
This piece of plastic crap HP calls a printer also manages to print so loud it wakes people in the next room clanging its rollers and cartridges together in a vain attempt to prevent paper jams when unfixable paper jams seems to be all HP is good at.
Trust me, save your money, go buy a printer from Kodak, Brother, or any other brand and save money on both ink, return labels, and sanity |

I was very impressed with this printer....until I actually tried to print something.
The setup was very easy. It configured the wireless connection effortlessly. It configured the fax, and made sure the connection worked. It set everything up very nicely. The driver is obviously very large as it took a long time to install everything. Not a big deal.
Then we tried to print. I printed one print quality test print, which the printer actually did through the installation all on it's own. Then I printed a test page when I completed the install on my laptop. GREAT stuff! Then my wife printed 2 pages...and she got a paper jam! No bid deal right? WRONG! I opened panel after panel, I looked and I looked...it would NOT release the paper jam error! Even after removing every shred of paper and checking every access port a dozen times and unplugging the machine and plugging it back in. The display still read paper jam and nothing I did cleared it.
Yes...you read that right...after 4 (FOUR) pages...this printer is done. I called HP tech support and they wanted me to clean the rollers. Clean the rollers after 4 pages???? If the rollers have a problem after 4 pages, can you imagine the problems you are going to have after 2 years??? Ya...good luck!

The only good thing is the print quality, but that comes at a price due to the ink cartridges being sucked dry within a very short period of time. I purchased this about 6 months ago or more (and have already replaced the black ink cartridge and I really don't print that much) and will be getting rid of it ASAP. I've had it! |

HP problem or your problem? |

I give it five stars with exceptions --- If you can over look the following mentioned objections it is a 5 star printer, if not, then subtract one star for every objection you cannot live with.
1. Loud, it clunks and grinds and bangs like it is devouring itself. Wireless is good because you can keep it in another room, and you will know it is working because you will still be able to hear it. 2. Takes a long time to load its huge software package and drivers -- some say hours but with a clean machine it will be more like 45-60 minutes, still a long time. 3. Refuses to print greeting card size envelopes. If you use Greating Card software it will print your cards but not your envelope. There is a trick, however, for the occassional user of American Greetings or Hallmark.
Subtract one star for every point you cannot live with.
The Trick: You take the quarter size, or half size envelope, open the flat slide it over a regular size piece of printing paper, close the flap and tape it with a small piece of tape and place it in the printer -- yes, locat the position of the envelope on the sheet of paper in the same location it woould be in if you were putting only the envelope into the tray (right side flap up). Now, from your greeting card software "envelope print page" do your thing, the printer will pull the standard size paper in with the card and print perfectly to the card, you address and your design. From this we know the greeting card software is good it is the envelope that is not right.
Many of the complaints concerning this printer have to do with the indiviuals personal systems and the junk they have loaded, hidden programs, gliches and the like and considering this printers extensive loading it is bound to come in conflict with something -- especailly on a trashy system -- blame the printer if you want. On a clean system, like a new computer it will load flawlessly, still take a long time but not as long and the wireless is a snap, just enter you security ID for the router and yhou are there. Anyone having more of a problem than mention is dealing iwth other problems beside the printer, they just don't know it yet. No, I do not work for HP, they should hire me considering all the research I have done on this trying to get it to print Card envelopes. Yes, I know why it won't print the card envelopes and it is HP fault for thinking small office workers do not use Greeting card programs and have failed to enclude the favorite size card envelope into the list of acceptable sizes. Thus, the idea this printer automaticlly can select size for you is not true, unless, of course, that specific size is in its memory. That's it. I'm taking my 6500 back to CostCo for my money back -- Why? For all of the above reasons. |

I bought this printer because my old HP G85xi, which worked fine with my old iMac, would not work with my new iMac with Snow Leopard. HP Tech support said there was no driver availible to make the G85xi compatable.
I did encounter some problems making the HP OfficeJet 6500 work wirelessly. I almost gave up, but somehow fnally got it to work. Other than that, I like it a lot. The features are good, the fax works well, the document feeder is great, and the print quality is outstanding. It is a bit noisy, but that doesn't bother me.
What I miss MOST OF ALL is a complete WRITTEN instruction book on how to use it. From now on I'm not going to buy ANYTHING unless I can get a complete WRITTEN instruction book (even if I have to purchase it separately). A downloadable set of instructions does not do anything for me. I have no intention of going into the printing business and printing out 200+ pages. |

The printer was confusing to set up. Since day one there have been paper jams. It's very inconvenient to have to stop in the middle of a job to fix this - especially when it happens all the time. I threw away the box (stupid me) or I would have taken it back immediately. This is absolutely the worst buy ever. It's slow, expensive to use, and doesn't print when you want it to due to paper jams. I am writing this bad review as a result of yet another paper jam. When I contacted HP to see what could be done, I was completely ignored. I have been happy with HP in the past, but would think twice about buying from them again. |

I'm an electrical engineer who works with information technology equipment every day. This printer is a colossal waste of time and money. An infinite source of frustrations...
1. Installation of drivers took a long time. 2. It would not print even after putting a brand new XL black ink cartridge. The page would be fed and seemed to be printing but it would come out completely blank. 3. Downloading a print troubleshooting utility from HP and running it identified a problem. It was "corrected" by the utility and the printer passed the diagnostic test fully. The computer was then rebooted. Printing another test page resulted in another blank page. 4. Removing the color cartridges results in the printer identifying the ink cartridges as "missing" or malfunctioning and takes the printer "off-line". 5. I was only able to print in magenta a picture downloaded from the internet. Never got any text to print. 6. Replaced this junk with the other piece of junk that is the old HP OfficeJet 6210 (it makes a machine-gun type noise) but at least it still prints.

I had the hp office jet g85 previously and stayed with hp because this was such a good product... the wireless 6500 is NOT. I do lots of black & white printing, working at home, and it has made my job much more stressful and time consuming. I have to double check everything because it randomly decides not to finish printing various pages, the envelopes jam constantly, the noise is horrible and a distraction as I am working, and it seems to consume the ink. All in all it has cost me money in ink and my time. I haven't even attempted to fax yet and doubt I ever will as I am thinking of looking for another brand printer and hanging this one up. It's like it misfeeds the paper and then forgets it's there. I have tried all kinds of troubleshooting to no avail. I would not recommend this printer because of its inconsistent reliability. |

I would give it 0 stars, but that is not an option. This is a printer for my home office and overall, here are my main problems:
1. You will need all colors of ink to replace the cartridges, even only when the black is low. 2. There is no option to print black only. 3. It is noisy 4. When connected to the VPN, the printer delays the opening of many applications and tries to connect to other drives. 5. Multiple problems with the fax, and they never go through and I need to reset the equipment. 6. You can only print on regular copy paper (no cardstock or any other paper). 7. Ink is very expensive and you cannot print many pages from one cartridge.
I wish I could just take it back, but I do not have a receipt and Dell requires one. technical support from Dell has never been able to help me and I have to rely on forums of other individuals trying to solve the same problems. |

This is a horrid printer. Just the "boot up" alone takes an eternity to finish. The paper feeder endlessly jams due to roller/guide misalignment. The speed is painfully slow when scanning or copying. The toner consumption is wildly quick. Forget using the color cartridges entirely as they are even smaller than the black cartridge and run out after very little color printing. The quality of the printed image is fine, nothing incredible. The numeric keys to dial fax numbers are made for a Liliputian and you will be endlessly fat fingering fax numbers. The fax also seems to have many problems "hand shaking" with other fax machines and drops fax connections far too often (had 2 other faxes on the same phone line with NO connection issues). In short, this is the worst printer/fax combo I have ever seen. I will be selling/donating it to some unfortunate soul if I don't take a bat to it first. |

**Please don't buy any more HP consumer level products**
I had a 2.5 year old C5180 all in one. I have probably printed 10 or less full color photos (which came out great) Suddenly today I have multiple ink failures--color cartridges that were between 30% and 80% full all show empty even though I was able to print in color the day before.
I followed the exact procedures on HP's website to reset the printer to no avail. I am a software / hardware engineer and know my way around electronics.
Their business / laser printers seem to be quality, but all their regular consumer stuff seems to be built to work great for a year or two and then die, forcing you to buy again. Not to mention their psycho ink prices.
So, once again my HP printer died after warranty, and all they want to do for me is to either: 1) Sell me a new or refurbished printer at a 'discount' which ends up being at or near (within $20) current Amazon prices! 2) Charge me $45 to troubleshoot the printer
Don't be stupid like I was. This is the third printer I've had issues with, and will not make the same mistake again. I urge everyone else to look elsewhere for printers. |

Received this AIO ptr a few weeks ago. Setup was a snap, my home network picked up the ptr with out any problem. I haven't done a whole lot of printing with it, one of the features I enjoy is the ability to print dual sides, this saves paper big time. This feature can be turned on/off easily. In other HP printers I have owned, I have always used re-manufactured print cartridges. Researching for the print cartridge 920/920xl, used in the HP 6500, I find it a little disturbing that the cartridges are not available, only the primary print cartrdige from HP. Seems odd!!! All in all, this is a great printer. That being said, I wish that the unit came with a paper user manual, I find that much easier to use than having to lool online for answers. Some users complain about the noise, mine doesn't seem to make any more noise than any other HP printer, so to me that a non-issue. |

You would think if their product was any good they would send me a "New Printer." But this smells of a "Recall" that they are fixing and shipping the repaired units as replacements!
I also am not happy that I'll be without a printer for almost 2 weeks!

It basically said: READ AND FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS. Read the written instructions first (Do not connect the USB or Ethernet cables until the Starter CD instructs you to). After you have followed the one page written instructions, insert the Starter CD and follow its set-up procedures. IT'S THAT SIMPLE! I have a simple 2009 3G HP Computer running Windows Vista. A long telephone call to HP resulted in a CD for software supported by Windows 7 is in the mail (the download would have taken forever). I also asked for a USB cord and I think it is on its way? HP met my needs but it was frustrating to go back, look, look again, and then finally find where the software is stated to be for XP and Vista only. That's a "duh" on me but the advertisement specs should be more assertive about software and USB cords. |

I first noticed this when I got an e-mail from HP announcing a sale. When I called, the salesman pushed this printer (because it was the most expensive on sale at $149) over the others and then claimed that there was a sale on ink and blablabla and soon he had added sales tax and shipping and the bill was over $250. I said "That is more than I am going to pay", and he told me "I won't offer you a cheaper printer", so I did what we all should do, I hung up on him. If you don't want to play by my rules, forget you, 'cause it's my ball and my game.
Then I found it at Newegg for a total of $99, shipping included. Moral of the story: HP does not have the best prices. Keep trying for that better price.
I am generally happy with this printer. The main issue I have had with all printers is when the sheet feed stops working. I will be buying remanufactured cartridges or refilling these, by the way. There are many companies that explain how to do this and you will save a bundle. |

Installation for this software takes a LONG TIME, after which the printer will pepper you with popups and modify your browser settings in an effot to enhance your user experience. Expect constant updates, lots of desktop icons, and a barrage of e-mails. If you are in dire need of attention, this printer will give it to you in spades.
Me, I would much rather the thing shut up and do its job. I share this printer among several computers, thus multiplying the annoyance factor of this needy device. I would not have purchased this had I known of the bloatware issue, and this is why I am writing this.
Otherwise, the printer has been fine. Print quality is very good, and the duplexing feature is really handy. HP claims to the contrary asside, cost per page is really high because of the ink prices. The cost of the printer was very reasonable. Also (are you listening, HP?) I would feel much more positive about this if the installation disk presented me with a "drivers only" option for installation.

This printer holds a lot of promise, but may not deliver what you expect. My experience with the HP OfficeJet 6500 Wireless printer has been poor to date. I have had one for less than one month and am returning it to HP for a replacement. The wireless networking does not work for me. It drops off the network and I have to restart the printer to get it back. It does work on the wired network just fine. The second problem I had was it will not fax through the Automatic Document Feeder. I get an error code every time I try. I can fax through my computer or from the scanner, but not from the ADF.
I will say that the HP online troubleshooting procedure was excellent and allowed me to eliminate many issues. The self-testing features of the printer are also excellent and shows that HP has come a long way in customer support. So far, the HP Solutions Center software has been very easy to work with and provides good control of the printer and its features. The Photosmart Essentials software is also very easy to use and useful. The print quality is good and it is easy to configure from the software or the front panel. All-in-all a great package, if everything works. |

I just upgraded from a 5600 to 6500 AIO printer because I have 6 computers and I was tired to share via the Computer. Setting up the Wifi connection to the printer was VERY easy. Configuring the printer was simple and the separate ink cartridge helps to save money.
The quality is great. I only have positive words for this product. This product also allows to save paper by printing on both sides. |

After installing the drivers and software needed to operate the printer wirelessly, my system suffered an intolerable slowdown. There's no need for any software to burden a system that badly. After uninstalling everything things returned to normal immediately.
My other beef was that my desk shook as if there were a mini-earthquake with every document printed. And I'll confirm that the printer has an annoying lengthy post-print reset cycle which is pretty annoying.
I boxed this printer up and shipped it back less than a day after receiving it. HP should be ashamed. |

I had a no trouble installing wired to a computer. I did have trouble installing wireless (wifi)to my laptop though but eventually got it. Both computers are on the same home network & work flawlessly now. The problem I believe was the sequence of connecting the USB cable for install between the printer & the computer. I think it goes printer end first then computer end. I am happy now, the speed, functions & noise level are very acceptable. Any amount of printing needs the XL size ink tanks. |

It took me a little while to get everything set up, but I finally did and the printer works fine, with good quality copies. I've also used the copier function, which is good. I haven't yet scanned or used the fax. The main drawback is the noise - it makes a lot of loud starting-up chugging sounds prior to printing, and is noisy when printing. Because of the lengthy start-up, it's also not as fast as I expected. But overall, I gave it a 4 because it works fine and set-up was okay, plus price was alright. |

Hardware good, software bad.... Usual for HP |

Reviewed on 16th April 2010:

Seems to print ok, I've only used it in wireless mode...which was an easy setup.... I installed the 13.0 version software, later uninstalled and did only drivers, uninstalled and did only drivers for IT personnel which was version 14.0 and none of the software or drivers fixed my problem with scanning.
I need to be able to scan with settings other than "default".. true I can change the settings but it scans when you pull up the software "without asking" and it does it at default settings, there is a prompt to save as is but it won't save. When you change your resolution settings, it forces another scan "at the higher settings" and again prompts you to save the settings "and again doesn't save, then you can get your picture.. go to the next sheet "without even closing the software, and you have to do it all over again as it keeps repeating the cycle defaulting to default settings and so forcing two scans of each sheet scanned..
Pretty obvious oversight, and pretty pathetic support since its so obvious of a problem.
Does "anyone".. anyone at all test this stuff first?
HP is bad about throwing out crap for software and only applying oil to the squeaky wheel.. but the time its fixed, its outdated. |

I can't believe all the negative feedback this product got. I am far from being a 'techie' and I had no problems at all getting this set up to my desktop and then also to the wireless on my laptop. I did go straight to the HP website and download the softwear on my desktop as for some reason the CD didn't load, but the Laptop worked great right off the bat. My desktop is XP and my laptop in Windows 7...maybe that had something to do with it. All I know is that it was easy. I would say total set up time from taking it out of the box, assembling it, and configuring the wireless was about an hour. As far as the noise...its laughable...because I replaced a very loud 10 yr old Lexmark with this. This printer is 10 times quieter than that monster was. I guess its all what you are used to. The eco speed version is a bit noisier than regular, and when there is no paper in it, it can be a bit louder, but for the price...who can beat it? I am very happy with this all in one! |

I read several, the good and bad, reviews about this printer before I bought it. I was considering the 8500 wireless but did not really need a touch screen - as it is wireless it will be located remotely so a touch screen seemed unnecessary. While in my cart the price dropped, thanks Amazon!, and I pounced. It arrived in one day! I am a prime member but did not pay extra - that just seems to happen a lot if you order early enough. I was able to install this printer wirelessly on our HP Laptop (also from Amazon on Prime thank you very much) and wirelessly on our home HP PC in about 40 minutes - while I was playing inside and outside with my 2 1/2 year old and going over homework with my 9 year old! It basically installed itself with few questions for me. I have zero complaints about the set up and use since then. I have printed, scanned, copied and faxed flawlessly. GREAT PRINTER! |

Was easy to install once I got the correct installation information for Windows Vista from HP's web site. The printer comes with a disk for Windows 7 that is useless for Vista. One would think that HP would send an installation disk for all operating systems during a transition period such as this. Printer works great. I love the wireless capability which allows placing the printer at a convenient spot rather than having it tied to close proximity to the computer. |

This HP printer sucks! |

This HP printer sucks! I hope I can return it to costco. I've had this for 3 months. I have Windows 7 64-bit. First, HP doesn't provide decent drivers. The scanner does not remember your settings. HP should stop making so many models of printers, and make sure the quality is alright, they should also provide decent drivers or else the printer is worthless. The print quality is fine. Noise is a little noisy, not too bad. Most of the time, whenever I scan more than say 4 pages in the adf scanner, it'll usually hang in the middle of scanning, or the scanner will hang and still say scanning, but its not scanning, while the pc might think its done. Thats just messed up. This AIO printer (mostly the scanning features) has wasted so much of my time. I should've just returned it within the 1st few weeks. Once you buy an HP printer, they don't care about supporting it. I'm going to try to return this HP printer, and for sure, the next one will be some other brand, probably Canon. HP Sucks!! |

A good little printer for the price considering the wireless and duplexing capabilities. It can also scan over the wireless, which is exactly what I needed. Plus, the fax pickup actually works as expected, no more baby sitting the pages as they load.
But as others have pointed out, it's annoyingly loud and clunky sounding, and all the parts feel cheap...I guess you get what you pay for. Of course, everybody knows HP really makes their money off the ink. I could not find a genuine replacement blank ink cartridge for less than $18. Total rip off. |

I don't know if I got a problem unit or if this printer is just bad. It is by far the worst printer I have ever owned. Every time the printer sat for a number of hours without being used I had to re-insert the CD in the computer and redownload in order to print. This would leave multiple copies on my computer which only took up space. Computer runs with Windows 7 and I don't know if that is why I had such problems - maybe this printer is not compatible with that. Don't know. Didn't care. Wasted way too much time and effort to keep this unit. It was returned within one week. I am much happier with my older HP printers.

Our printer is brand-new. Did all the research and decided that even if it was a bit slow etc., for the price point it offered a lot of features we really wanted, such as wireless printing so we didn't have to drag our laptops into the room if we wanted to print something.
It even works without being physically connected to our non-wifi desktop (which is direct-connected to the wireless router).
Unfortunately, it had been set up for less than 12 hours before we discovered a significant, deal-killing drawback. When it goes into "power save" mode, the wireless turns off, and there is NO WAY TO WAKE THE PRINTER UP short of unplugging the power. The power-off button flashes periodically but ignores any effort to turn it off and back on. None of the other buttons work. Attempting to print does not wake it up. I have heard - but have not yet tested - that an incoming fax will still be received. But it's useless as a wireless printer.
Googling it shows it's a known problem and even HP tech support doesn't have an answer that works.
I've checked for firmware updates and we've got all the latest stuff.
At this point, I'm seriously considering returning it. As set up, it's a defective product. The instructions explicitly say "do not turn off by unplugging"... they don't mention that "except this is the only way TO turn it off. |

Set up took longer than expected because it didn't have a "manual" where you could find out certain features, such as setting the clock & date. It eventually did so automatically when connected to the commputer, but did not indicatre that it would happen & the printer had a prompt to set the date & time with no explatation how! It has been easy to use, except when I want to enlarge or reduce the size of the copy. It is not clear how to do this & takes a lot of trial & error. |

I had a HP printer/copier/scanner that I purchased from Wal Mart years ago and it did we well. It did photos so good that I really did not want to have to purchase a new printer. I used it, petted it babied it until it just could not hold it's head up anymore. I went on line for months researching and trying to find a printer that I thought would best suit my needs. One day I received an email from HP advertising the HP 6500 Wireless All-in-One inkjet printer. It had all the features I had before, plus the fax. It was on sale for $115.00 with NO SHIPPING. I wasn't sure about the wireless part because I have a laptop (wireless service of course) along with my desktop. I had a lot of trouble getting the wireless set up on the laptop. A friend of mine said "get the wireless" then you can use it with your laptop. I did. This was the easiest piece of equipment that I have purchased to set up and get it going. I did the desktop first, then set out to sync the laptop. It was so easy I almost couldn't believe it. The print quality is good, it is fast, the ink is reasonable and has the four cartridges which means you only have to replace them as they run out, which doesn't all happen at the same time. The menus on the front are easy to use, it is a very smart machine, and may I say, it's quite beautiful. Something that looks nice sitting there on your desk. In case you haven't guessed yet, I LOVE MY MACHINE.....dtk-Belleview, Florida..... |

At any given time, half of the computers cannot print on it or receive a scan from it, etc. In a word: unreliable. It is noisy on the start up and after the page(s) prints. Print quality is fine, nothing special, especially given the frustration experienced while trying to get it to actually print. Great idea (all-in-one + wireless connectivity)...poor execution. |
