This is a nice refurbished computer but it has no audio output or at least it's very weak. I think the built-in amps are dead. I'm using external speakers so it's not a big issue. Maybe if I had time and patience I could send it back for repair. Oh well. The screen is very nice and everything other than the audio is working great.
If the audio worked I would have given it 5 stars.

I ordered this laptop as a media player for being in Afghanistan. First off let me say that everything that I needed this computer for it has more than lived up to my expectations. For the fella down there complaining about dropping of WiFi, I am in a foreign country where the internet is worse than the dial up connection in the USA and not once have I never had a problem with the wireless capabilities of this computer. As far as staying away from HP I wouldn't suggest it at all. Like I stated I am using this computer outside of the united states and it works just fine for a refurb. I highly recommend buying this computer if you are strapped for cash and dont really feel like investing a lot of money for a machine. |

Let me start off by saying, the specs on this laptop are wonderful, especially for the price. For all practical purposes, this should be a great computer, refurbished or not. That being said...
I have had this computer for less than a week. The only issue that I have had with it, is getting connected online. I actually connected online for about 10 minutes. Then, out of the blue, the internet connection died but the laptop was still connected and visible to my network.
I am no novice when it comes to computers and am A+, Network+ Certified. This being stated, the obvious, "check the wifi light", "re-boot the computer", "check all other connections", and "check services" thing went without saying. I even tried giving it a static IP address, disabling all in encryption on my uverse router(even though the other 2 desktops, laptop, 2 cell phones and the wii were doing just fine), to see if that would fix the problem and it did NOT.
Finally, I contacted HP and after chatting with them online from another wireless laptop in the house for over an hour, they tell me to do a complete factory restore on a computer that is only a three days old (out of the box) and has nothing on it. WTF!!!
I am thoroughly disappointed in this Laptop and HP. Maybe, there are some of you out there who could think of some other ways to fix it that myself, the HP rep and the forums on this laptop couldn't. However; if you are not a techie person and are planning to buy a computer to use at home, ONLINE, STAY AWAY FROM THIS PRODUCT!!! I dont care if the factory restore works or not, this thing is going back.
P.S. The factory restore didnt work. |

I bought my G71 refurb through another vendor, I've only had it a week, but it works! Set my daughter up with her own user account. She's seven, comes home from school and has no problems with the G71. Syncing it with my wi-fi was simple. I bought a new desktop last year, and I was able to use it's Office '07 license to activate the Office '07 version on the G71. (I think a Microsoft license can be activated on three personal use pc's) The screen is big & bright. The keypad has a friendly solid feel to it. I've seen other owners of new G71's talk about how quiet and unremarkable the speakers are, I don't have that issue with this refurb. It's not a boombox AND laptop, it's a laptop with built-in speakers, and that's what it sounds like. In fact, my daughter was playing an online game, and I had to turn the volume down, because I was trying to watch tv, and the redundant game music was driving me nuts. I've put almost 2,000 music files on it, my photo-editing software, ftp, html, swish programs, and I'm not having any problems with them. The only problem I am having is getting Win7 to fit my own photo as wallpaper, and not stretch it to fit the layout of the 17.3 screen. (but I feel confident that if I google the question, I can find an online resolution - for now I just crop my pic in my photo editor, and post it - easy peasy) If the unit goes bad, I can adjust this review, but so far I'm happy having bought the refurb, and not the new one. (who knows, maybe the refurb version has better audio than the new version - or maybe not) |

A Hp Touchsmart my X-GF had that I had to change the hard drive and reload the OS in with a dead wireless card in less than 5 months of purchase new. This 17" Pav bought new has been nothing but slow, crashes all the time, fails simple tasks non stop, and is just fail with windows 7. If it says HP avoid it, they build all their models with the same bin of cheap hardware, unreliable brands and methods used in every machine. HP/Compaq is a failed brand. I love this computer,it has enough harddrive for 30,000+ mp3 with 150gb to spare. The wide screen looks huge when use it on your lap,the video is clear and the colors rich. I did not have any trouble setting it up,it did 90% by it's self. The Windows 7 is very easy to use, much better than Vista. The black and silver color combinanation looks great. The speakers are very good, the sound is clear and loud enough to enjoy. |

PAID way too much for this headache. HP told us pay $400+ for repair. Labeled our problem customer damaged although they did admit no signs of external abuse shown.
Almost a few days after I got my laptop it showed a few dead pixels. We procrastinated in taking it in. Now it got so bad we decided to send it in since we owned it less than a year (got it nov. 2009 sent in March 2009). It has always just sat on my computer desk and almost never even closed it. They said it had an internal crack inside the screen glass and it was leaking and we would have to pay over $400 to repair. They claimed it was our fault, but this after the tech admitted there was no signs of external damage anywhere.
He said it would get worse, and sure enough as soon as it came back from their shop I now have twice the dead pixels I had before. I can't even see the right hand lower tool box anymore. I paid over $700 for this and although I have no problems with the performance (ASIDE from needing EXTERNAL SPEAKERS due to unaudible volume) ...their warranty was useless to me if they were going to reject any responsibility. I do however blame myself for not returning it as soon as I saw the first fleck of defective evidence....shame on me! don't wait take it BACK! |

I have purchased 4 hp products, and not one is working today. I have had 3 printers, each one only lasting about a year, before having imaginary paper jams or a complete shut down. I should have learned after the 2nd one. I also owned an hp pavillion laptop with a 17 inch screen. I unfortunatly only got a 1 year protection. 1 year after buying it, the motherboard fried. I took it to geeksquad, and they replaced the motherboard for $330.00. Geeksquad has a 30 day garrantee on all work. 45 Days later, the motherboard went out again. This time I contacted HP. The lady was real nice, assigned me a case # and transfered me to a senior guy named Luke. The first thing he mentioned, was the fact that I only had a one year protection plan, so the only thing they could do for me was replace the motherboard for $400.00. So I took my loss and bought a gateway. Awsome machine and the warranty and customer service is outstanding. I have not had any problems with my gateway, but called the customer service number to check them out, they are very knowledgable, helpful, polite, and seem to enjoy talking to you. I also bought a lexmark printer, and it still works. Hp, the guy sounded a little slow, just didn't get it. |

Writing a review as a layperson. I don't pretend to know a lot about the technology that goes into this laptop. Was disappointed to see that the price has been reduced by $100.00 since I purchased mine in Feb 2010. For those of you considering this laptop that extra money can be used to enhance the less-than-perfect HP model.
This is a purely con based review. However overall I've rated it high. For the price amazon has it going for I would recommend it although this are the things, IMHO, to watch for:
The internal speakers are terrible even after adjusting virtual sound & loudness equalization the speakers aren't loud enough. And even after using the bass boost the treble is overwhelming. Here's the first place I'd spend my extra money.
Screen resolution is too bright. Again even after making adjustments the brightness is irritating. I've been using a screen protector to try & dim the light to no avail.
Maybe it's because I've been a PC user for more years than a laptop I find the touch pad way annoying. It's so sensitive I've lost my typing because a simple, albeit accidental, wave of my hand close to the touch pad has erased my typing.
The loaded software too much & not enough. I was under the impression that Microsoft Office was included & not a 60 day trial. The same with Norton. Worse with Norton was that I only got a few weeks to test the program.

'KUDOS' to HP TECH SUPPORT |

This is my 3rd HP laptop. I was hesitant in buying this after reading many terrible reviews about HP Tech Support. I had occasion to have to contact them in regard to a graphic problem with my HP G71-340. I reached a wonderful young man, Ashis, who is in India. I am a 70 yr old woman & have never received such 'royal' treatment from anyone as I did with him. With 2 phone calls, my initial call, and he called me back the next day, my graphic problem was fixed. Not only that, but he optimized some other features that I didn't even know needed it. It is difficult for most people like myself to keep up with typing, holding the phone and following instructions. However, Ashis was most repectful & patient with me. Now my laptop is better than I thought it could be. I am truly thrilled with it & especially with my experience with HP Tech Support. I hope someone at HP reads this and gives special commendations to Ahis in Darjeelig India. P.S. I even had an arm chair (desk chair) tour of his location with the map he forwarded to me. It is most beautiful. No wonder he so perfect. Thank You |

After 3 weeks it's been going great. As I write this review I'm watching Netflix in one browser, writing this review in another broser (side by side) and burning a DVD with no delays.
Pro's: Size, screen brightness and resolution, HDMI (watch on my TV), keyboard and touchpad, CPU speed and memory are great, options like Lightscribe and Webcam, Price
Con's: No backup discs (you can create images and backups but nothing replaces good old fashioned discs), cases more expensive but duh its a bigger computer, Speakers are quiet but it is a laptop and I use headphones that have their own volume control so no big deal.
I looked at Acer, Dell, and Toshiba. This had great CPU speed, memory, and options for the price (like HDMI and 4 gb memory). So far I'm raving about this PC! |

I was hesitant about buying a new laptop. I hate to spend so much on something that I know will be outdated soon, and I know little about the brand choices and what is best. I have had an HP Compaq laptop for 6 years and it has run well and is still working. I thought about getting a different brand this time around, but then decided that why should I when my experience with HP has been great, so far? I like the big screen and full keypad, including the extra number pad on the side. I do a ton of typing and writing research papers for work and grad school so I wanted something that would be easy on my eyes and comfortable to use. I knew I wanted more than 1 MB memory, more than 200 GB hardrive, and a dual processor. It was also important that the computer had Windows 7, not Vista. I did not want to spend over $700, either. I only received the computer yesterday and set it up and began transferring date from my other laptop, so i can't say much for the quirks it may have after time. However, it uploads data amazingly fast and streams video content from the internet beautifully.
Pros: lightweight big screen full kep pad plenty of USB and other ports touch pad is not overly sensitive and has scrolling on it fast easy to navigate great support system to help figure out set up Windows 7 Home is enough for my day to day word processing clear graphics evenly weighted not too many random extra things downloaded on it when received
Cons: the speakers are terrible--very quiet

Even my wireless card was effortless. The large screen is perfect for on-line games. The battery life is about 3 hours on mine. The only drawbacks I have encountered is not having any slots in the back for usb ports. It would be nice to have a power cord slot in the back as well. I Love this laptop.
